Mr. Matthews apprenticed in architectural stonecutting at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City in 1990.  There he excelled in his group at cutting precise pieces of limestone for the construction of the Cathedral.  He was exposed to many of the large and most modern tools of the trade that are used in the construction of grand structures of stone. He learned to carve limestone, sandstone and granite as well as many other types of stone.

And, after being recommended by the program’s master stonecutter and accepting an invitation to Bath Technical College in Bath, England , he spent one year there studying Architectural Stonework.

At Bath Tech. he studied architectural surrounds for doors and windows and profiled openings as well as how to create dimensional stones such as monuments and pier caps. After graduating at the head of his class Mr. Matthews was then initiated and accepted as a member of the London Guilds and Crafts.  He was honored by the mayor of the City of Bath for his contributions to the University and to the Guild.

When he returned from Bath Mr. Matthews began working on residential construction projects and quickly learned how stone veneers are produced in the field and installed for residential purposes. Using his skill and artistry from his recent apprenticeship and schooling, and spotting the need for quality, custom veneer installation, he founded Legacy Stoneworks in 1992.  Legacy began to fill the local demand for custom, restorative, European and Architectural Stonework and has since become the regional leader in stonework.  Mr. Matthews carries with him today the knowledge and skill acquired from these fine stonework institutions as well from his various work experiences.
